Character File - Calabi-Yau Beings
The Time Lords, when they were at their peak, were able to travel between universes. They were not the only ones who did so. When they were killed, the paths between alternate universes (such as "Calabi-Yau space" and "E-space") and our own ("N-space") were shattered.
redstarsatnight has informed me that it would be in your best interests to know more about the inhabitants of Calabi-Yau space in particular.
The Guardians of Time and Space
The Old Ones
The Eternals
The Chronovores
The Dragons
The Guardians of Time and Space travel across all universes. Collectively, they are known as the Six-Fold God, and when they are united as one being with the Key to Time(1) in their hands - an event which has not happen in the history the universe, nor should it ever - the Six-Fold God can re-make existence. But as stated, this has not ever happened, because the Six Guardians of Time and Space have over the years developed distinct personalities; they no longer desire to be united into one form. They still search for the Key to Time, but other time-aware beings(2) continue to prevent them from obtaining it.
Individually, the Guardians of Time and Space are the White Guardian, the Black Guardian, the Crystal Guardian, the Azure Guardian, the Red Guardian and the Gold Guardian. They represent different aspects of existence, and all possess the ability to inhabit other life forms (taking them as "hosts") and influence other life forms into doing their work ("agents"), as the Guardians themselves can neither hold corporeal form outside of Calabi-Yau space, nor can they directly influence events.
The White Guardian is the representative of Light and Order. The White Guardian can influence these elements to a certain degree, but without the Key to Time, complete control is impossible. The White Guardian once charged the Doctor with finding the Key to Time and bringing it to the Guardian, but once the Doctor had reunited the Key he realised it was too powerful for any one being to control and disassembled it again. The Black Guardian is the representative of Darkness and Chaos, the White Guardian's polar opposite. The Black Guardian's agents have included Steven Taylor and the Shadow, both employed to foil the Doctor's attempt to reunite the Key to Time. The Black Guardian revels in chaos, not control, and as such does not want the Key to Time to ever be reassembled.
The Crystal Guardian, also known as the Celestial Toymaker, is the only one of the Guardians to successfully possess a host (the Time Lord Rallonwashatellaraw) for an extended period of time. The Crystal Guardian is the master of Dreams and Illusions. The Crystal Guardian was exiled to N-space (our universe) by his peers and the exile sent him crazy; he occupied himself with foolish games that his opponents could never escape from. Again, the Doctor has encountered this Guardian more than once. During their last encounter, the Doctor managed to banish the Crystal Guardian back to Calabi-Yau space for the other Guardians to deal with. The Azure Guardian controls the Equilibrium of existence. It is the Azure Guardian who ensures that no universe is rampant with pure goodness the same as no universe is ruled by pure evil; the Azure Guardian also makes sure that there are no snags or tears in the Web of Time and that the universe is whole and neat. Since the universe was cut off from the other dimensions, the Azure Guardian has been unable to fulfil these duties; as a result, Rifts in Time and Space have formed, history has become muddled and in flux and the balance of power in the universe constantly shifts from one side to another.
The Red Guardian is the figure of Justice in the Six-Fold God. It is the Red Guardian who keeps the other Guardians in line and doles out punishments to the higher beings(2). The Red Guardian in possession of the Key to Time can change history, working to erase a transgressor's entire existence - even going so far as to remove an entire planet, galaxy or universe from creation; without the Key, the Red Guardian can still tell lie from truth and see who deserves reward and who deserves punishment. The Gold Guardian is in charge of the twin aspects of Life and Death. Without the Key to Time, the Gold Guardian can see how long a being has lived, what they have done in their lives, what they have the potential to do and when and how they will die. When the Gold Guardian possesses the Key to Time, these powers are greatly increased; the Guardian can restore life and take it away, and rewrite a being's lifetime.
How these beings join together and what the Six-Fold God would look like is unknown, as such an event has never occurred. The Guardians, many eons of subjective time ago, used to work in tandem to solve problems - now, they prefer to work alone.
The Old Ones, sometimes known as the Great Old Ones, are beings from before the current universe; they came from the universe before this one. They were originally a powerful race of beings who were the equivalent of the Time Lords in their native space. However, when their universe ended, the Old Ones shunted themselves into a parallel dimension which collapsed seconds later into the new universe (theorised to be Calabi-Yau space, the possible parent dimension of this universe). The new universe, our own, had different laws of physics than their original universe, and they discovered that they had gained god-like powers which allowed them to manipulate the universe they now existed in.
The Great Old Ones are preserved in Humanity's race memory as their worst nightmares. They are conceived as creatures that spread evil, chaos and destruction wherever they go. The Great Old Ones were incapable of being killed in the normal dimension. They knew of the Time Lords and considered them a threat. Quantum mnemonics is the language of the Old Ones - it can be used to rewrite reality and create or destroy universes. However, millions of years ago on Earth during the time of the dinosaurs, the Old Ones encountered the Chronovores, whose diet is the fabric of time and all its inhabitants. The Old Ones fled from the Chronovores, leaving behing their bodies in hibernation on Earth; they became beings of pure energy (their energy bodies are the equivalent of energy from twenty billion nuclear bombs).
They have never been able to find their bodies again, or if they have, they have not been able to recreate a pathway into their bodies. They can manipulate technology in their energy forms; this is how they retain the service of the Dragons. They use their powerful minds to subject beings of the universe to their will and achieve their goals that way - but quantum mnemonics as a language can only be spoken from the mouth of an Old One, and as such, they cannot manipulate reality as wholly as they desire.
The Eternals are beings of immense power, but limited creativity, who utilise the thoughts and emotions of Ephemerals (inhabitants of the main universe such as humans and Time Lords) for their own ends. The amoral Eternals make it their principal aim in life to amuse themselves. In the course of their games, the Eternals will sometimes pose as gods and play with the existence of an entire world. These games were started by the Guardians of Time - particularly the Crystal Guardian, lover of games - whom the Eternals greatly respect as leaders.
The Eternals are written onto the Web of Eternity rather than the smaller Web of Time, which means they are unaffected by Time and thus unaging. Eternals cannot be destroyed, but they can be banished and locked to a particular dimension - and even, in some cases, transformed into a mortal Ephemeral. Eternals can also use telepathy and create objects from the memories of Ephemerals. They can also appear in dreams.
The Eternals are, as their name suggests, eternal, therefore a history of their race is hard to define. However, the first event that they are known to have participated in was to banish the Carrionites into the Deep Darkness during the Dark Times of the Universe. Some of the Eternals passed themselves off as the Gallifreyan's deities such as Time, Pain and Death at one point in Gallifrey's history. Not all Eternals did this; some Eternals had never even heard of Time Lords before the Last Great Time War. The carnage of the Last Great Time War horrified even the aloof Eternals to the extent that they left the main universe, retreating into Calabi-Yau space forever.
Chronovores are generally seen as pure-white humanoids with small wings and a helmet-like head, but they can easily change their shape into whatever form they please. They have three main sources of sustenance. In general, they can feed on the natural energy of Calabi-Yau space, but to them this is dull and unappealing food. Chronovores can also eat the history of a humanoid, which annihilates the humanoid from existence (they especially like Time Lords - or did, before the Time War). The Chronovores' favourite food is alternate dimensions, which they try to devour when they find them. (Alternate dimensions are created via the happening or non-happening of a great event, the alternate splitting off from the main universe.) Because of this diet, the Chronovores are feared and hated by the other transcendental beings, especially the Eternals and the Old Ones.
Dragons are massive winged reptiles who feature heavily in humanoid myths and legends. It is unknown whether they originated in the main universe, travelled to and settled in Calabi-Yau space, or whether they originated in Calabi-Yau space, travelled back and forth between the dimension and the main universe for long enough to become established in humanoid race memory, and then retreated to Calabi-Yau space. Some Time Lords theorised that both were correct, and that there were two different kinds of dragons - a main universe dragon and a Calabi-Yau dragon. The differences between the two types of dragons, however, was never explained by the Time Lords.
The powers of dragons include the ability to shift between Calabi-Yau space and the main universe at whim (before the main universe was shut off from the other dimensions), the ability to change their size from larger than a planet to small enough to fit in a humanoid's hand, the ability to breathe fire and the ability to freeze higher beings(2) to stone. Dragons do not eat or sleep but they can hibernate for millions of years, and they can die, though only of old age. The Old Ones have employed the dragons to do their bidding more than once, as they possess the one thing that dragons desire most of all; the technology to produce more dragons.
(1) - the Key to Time. The Key to Time is a powerful and mythic artifact which the Guardians of Time and Space use to maintain control over the universe. Its shape is that of a perfect crystalline cube. They Key can be broken into six segments and a core rod. The White Guardian is in charge of the core rod at all times, and each of the six segments correspond to a Guardian. The Black segment in the hands of a higher being (see below), for example, can be used on its own to tear a hole in the fabric of the universe, the Gold segment can restore life and so on. Only once in the history of the universe has the Key to Time been reassembled, and it was immediately disassembled again.
(2) - 'time-aware beings'/'higher beings'. A time-aware being (also known as a 'higher' being) is one with some knowledge, if not influence over time-active powers - meaning, a being who can manipulate or travel in time. This group of beings includes the Time Lords, the denizens of Calabi-Yau space, the Forest of Cheem, the Nestene Consciousness, the Daleks, the Monan Host, the human Time Agency (formed and disbanded in the 51st century) and the Grey Travellers.
Words of advice: If you encounter any of these beings, get as far away from them as you can as fast as you can...
...and hope that the universe doesn't collapse behind you as you run. -DB
